Drug Treatment Centers Georgia: Drug Trafficking in South Dakota

South Dakota, although the fifth least populous state in the United States, still has drug problems. Drug trafficking occurs in the state, leading to illicit substances being readily available to the general populace, and this can lead to addiction in a person of any age. So since the area is not exempt from drug trafficking, it is not exempt from the related crime and violence. There is approximately a little over six percent of the state’s population that have used illicit drugs in a one-month period.

Drug Problems are Increasing

A problem increasing in South Dakota is the use and abuse of methamphetamine. Meth labs increase in number each year. Marijuana is also a major problem in the state, with over 60 percent of all drug treatment admissions for this drug.

Cocaine use is extensive in SD and is widely available on the street as crack cocaine. Smuggled in from Florida, Texas and Georgia, this drug is closely connected to violence and street gangs.

No matter the size of town, any location throughout the state is facing the dangers connected with drug trafficking, and the very real exposure of our kids to illegal drugs. For example, the small town of Wanblee, SD, with a population of only 725 in 2010, recently got a new reality on the drug scene. Thirteen residents were indicted for drug trafficking in Jackson and Shannon Counties. They had been operating for four years before apprehended. They were distributing meth and marijuana, some operating in school zones.

High Amounts of Drugs are Available in SD Counties

Other counties of South Dakota are designated as high intensity drug trafficking areas. This designation is given by the Federal government to show which regions need more resources to combat drug trafficking groups and criminals. The counties which have a high volume of drug trafficking and are named in the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area are:

Beadle
Brookings
Brown
Clay
Codington
Custer
Fall River
Lawrence
Lincoln
Meade
Minnehaha
Pennington
Union
Yankton

Drugs enter these counties via the main highways, being transported in vans, cars, trucks and camping vehicles. Much of the drug trade is controlled by drug cartels from Mexico. Dealers living out in rural areas use their isolation as cover for cultivating marijuana.

Effective Rehab can Make a Difference

Despite South Dakota being quite effective with drug control legislation, the threats have not been eradicated. Two other areas of significant concern are prescription drug abuse and a high number of convictions for DWI. More needs to be done to stem the tide of drug abuse and addiction and there will be no parent who would disagree. No one wants their children to become a drug addict.

Luckily, there are effective drug rehab facilities for addicts that can provide lasting sobriety. Perhaps that is the way to make a real difference in the state, one person at a time. If you can ensure an addict will have the best chance at recovery and in maintaining a sober life, this can be the best win yet. It means a life saved. It means a happier existence for all concerned.
