Why Are 3 Drugs Used for Death Penalty Executions but Vets Use Only 1 to Euthanize Pets?

Question by gardensallday: why are 3 drugs used for death penalty executions but vets use only 1 to euthanize pets?
My cat had cancer last year, and I had him euthanized, which was a difficult thing.

Yahoo had a story today that a georgia death row inmate says that one of thedrugs used for execution is expired, and without that drug, the execution can be very painful. I think I have read before that this is a valid concern.

so why are 3 drugs used for death row executions? This makes me wonder if my pet did suffer much pain while the vet euthanized him, although I was there and he did not seem to be in pain from the procedure.
